Barrel Rider Games has released its science fiction take on Swords & Wizardry Whitebox with the release of White Star: White Box Science Fiction Roleplaying on DriveThruRPG [AL] and RPGNow [AL] for $9.99 just in time for May the Fourth celebrations. Author James M. Spahn has taken the familiar engine of S&W Whitebox and re-skinned it with space opera and science fiction elements, drawing upon a number of classic television and movie tropes, aliens, and themes to create a toolbox and sandbox game that allows for the development of a GM’s own personalized setting.
The new game is completely compatible with other versions of S&W Whitebox and other Swords & Wizardry [AL] games and products, and even comes with its own compatibility logo that third party publishers can use to create and share their own products with.
Erik Tenkar of Tenkar’s Tavern received an early preview copy of the game and has already started the ball rolling on third party content creation by creating the Ghostmen, creatures that draw nourishment from the conflicts of others.
There is also an official Google+ community for support of the game.
Print editions of the game are coming soon, and those who purchase the PDF from OneBookShelf will receive a discount on the print version from there when it becomes available. Hardcover and softcover options will both be available.
