What Makes A Monster “Lovecraftian”?

Over at Gonzo History, a new series of articles by James Holloway has just started, looking at what makes monsters “Lovecraftian”. Only the first part in the series has been posted so far, but it makes some fair points that go beyond it simply being about something having tentacles and a strange-sounding name. Ultimately the alienness and just “wrongness” of something is what helps it, and there’s a Wikipedia entry that further explores “Lovecraftian horror” and provides many themes that appear in it and is well worth reading. There is also an rather excellent essay by Pete Rawlik posted at The Lovecraft Zine that explores Cosmicism, which Lovecraft plugged into.
