Unhinging Clerics from Alignment

John Stater of Land of Nod has written an interesting post regarding Clerics and a different way to apply them within games based not on alignment but on their relationship to their deity and purpose. By allowing different alignments this means that Clerics can run the gamut of many different personality types┬áthat still attempt to stay within the confines of the religion’s constructs but give characters leeway to be a little more individual. This way you can have a selfish Cleric still working mostly towards a deity’s purpose, or a good Cleric working within an evil cult. This leads to some interesting consequences in-game, especially if a Cleric suddenly finds themselves cut off from the source of their power because they pushed just a little too much.
