Wandering Wednesday: Doomshade

Doomshades are undead created as punishment for angering the gods of old. Mortal minds trapped for eternity within the shade-like body cannot maintain their sanity forever and the passage of time makes these creatures quite mad. That insanity lends them a dangerous cunning and doomshades are fearsome opponents.

Special Attacks: The doomshade is capable of striking with long feeding tendrils burst from its mouth to envelope the face and head of its prey. The life drain causes 2d6 hit points in damage. Further, the target must successfully save versus Spells or the target’s hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the damage taken. This reduction wears off in an hour’s time. A target who’s maximum hit points hits zero is forever slain.

Special Defenses: Powered by the wrath of a forgotten deity, these creatures are immune to mind effecting spells and illusion including (but not limited to): command, charm person/monster, friends as well as poison and all paralyzing and petrifying effects. In addition doomshades may become incorporeal at will and, while in that state, may only be struck by magical weapons and spells.

Doomshades are solitary creatures, hating all other forms of life and un-life. They remain close to where they died, bound by their curse to watch the slow decay and corruption of their mortal shell. Though they appear as cloaked specters, doomshades are turned by clerics as if they were wraiths.

Their preferred method of attack is to drop into the midst of an unsuspecting group of victims. In that first round of surprise they lash out with their  feeding tentacles, wrapping them around the head of their chosen victim and draining the life energy from them. In rare instances that the doomshade is incapable of using its feeding tentacles (such as extreme injury) they will lash out with their talon-like claws as a last resort.

Doomshades are weakened in sunlight and suffer a -2 to all rolls while exposes to full sunlight.

Even if slain, a curse levied by a god is not so easily thwarted. The doomshade will reform in a week’s time. Only powerful magics such as Wish can permanently lay a doomshade to rest.
