Orc & Goblin Light Penalties

Delta has written a great post looking at Orc and Goblin light penalties in D&D-alikes and why it doesn’t create much of a real difference during gameplay. He looks initially at the historical origins of the modifier and then expands upon it to make it operate more along the lines of the type of modifier you may apply for blindness in a number of games (as a -4 modifier, which is what I often use for blindness in games).

Of course, this is assuming that the creatures are fully blind when in the sun, but sunlight varies during the day, so perhaps a range of modifiers is needed, or perhaps some additional scaling for complete blindness at other times. Some food for thought.
