“Up or down” initiative, a different way to handle it

Adam Muszkiewicz has posted an article about a new way to do individual initative (rooted in Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG). It’s an interesting approach to handling that basically changes the results of initiative into three distinct phase blocks of actors: before the GM’s roll, those on the same, and those who go after. There’s some granularity to this as the GM uses the worst of the initiative rolls for monsters, while still allowing for the continuum of results from individual rolls to allow characters to act, and that number can change between rounds. In essence it boils initiative down to three stages each round, and individual characters may act in any of them depending on how well they roll each round, which is more fluid than the traditional group initiative approach and a nice middle ground for handling larger groups when doing individual initiative.
