Castles & Crusades Players Handboook 6th printing kicks 5th printing to the curb

The 6th printing of the Castles & Crusades Players Handbook has been sent out to Kickstarter backers early in advance of the other books in the recent campaign. As can be seen from the pictures below, apart from some changes in artwork and layout, there is a huge improvement in readability and quality coming from the shift from using matte paper to using glossy paper as well as changing the background graphic.

The Kickstarter campaign was created to enable the mass reprinting of the three core Castles & Crusades books and to bring them all into color. If the Players Handbook can be used to judge the quality of the other two books coming, this is going to be an absolutely beautiful set once it’s complete, and especially so for those who purchased the leather versions of the books.

Here you can see the 5th printing (left) and 6th printing (right) side by side.

Below is a comparison the 5th printing (top) with the 6th printing (below).

Below is a sample of a page listing a page of spells in the 5th printing. The color scheme makes it difficult to read individual entries in tables or lists.

The same page in the 6th edition looks very different, helped by a change in the background.

As you can see from the last two pages, there’s a very clear difference in the readability of the comparable pages between the 5th and 6th printings. Many of the complaints that players of Castles & Crusades had with the 5th printing were that the pages were difficult read due to the ink being subsumed into the page and the background, but it looks like this new printing removes that problem completely.

The book isn’t on general sale yet in print or PDF but when it is it will be available to order direct from Troll Lord Games at their online store, via DriveThruRPG [AL] or RPGNow [AL], as well as OSR-friendly retailers that stock Castles & Crusades.
