Magic-user familiars are a great boon at the lower levels of play, but are often the targets of attack by other monsters or NPCs because of the benefits they confer. Protecting them during play is challenging, but what’s worse is having to wait a long time to replace the last one that was killed off. The two oldest sons of Rick Stump of Harbinger Games have come up with a great magic item that can help shield the little critters called the Familiar’s Hat. Basically it’s a pocket dimension exclusively for the protection of the familiar while inside the hat that also emulates the type of environment the familiar would normally be found it. Overall, a very neat and useful idea. Although written for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, this can easily be converted to other systems.
